When thinking about and designing our set one of the main aspects of history that I believe we should take into account is German Expressionism.
German Expressionism, in a manner of speaking, was the birth of the horror film. The Cabinet of Dr.Caligari 1920 was one of the first, and most probably had an effect on Kafka himself. These films of this era were the ones which gave a huge headstone for the horror films of the near future. For example, the image above is now known as an horror set the warped walls, dust and grit and the overall awkward atmosphere.
I think for the sets we are going to design, especially Gregor's room, should hold these great aspect of horror films such as this. I think that we could have warped walls such as these to help emphasize the idea of claustrophobia in the room.
